McGrath Leads First Laps of
Season Before car Fades
(8/28/10)-
In what most would call the
closest modified racing of the season at Sundance Vacations
Speedway, the Jersey Outlaw, “Pistol” Pete Brittain held off Bobby
Jones and company to score the $1800 cone race win Saturday on the
1/3-mile oval. In hard charger form, Steve Shultz of Drums came from
the 13th starting spot to notch his third Street Stock
feature win of the season and Mike Kline of Lancaster claimed his
fourth FWD main event victory of the year. Coplay’s Scott Hubler
continued his winning ways and grabbed his seventh P.A.L. Legends
victory of the season.
Jeff McGrath
started from the pole and led the opening circuit of the 25-lap
Street Stock main over Mike Garris, Sr., Bernie Uphold, Robert Fink
and Kevin Higgins.
The lap counter hit
two and Fink shot by Garris for second. He then overtook McGrath and
grabbed the race lead. Meanwhile, Chip Wanamaker climbed his way
into the second spot and Dale Santee and Mitch Hawk cracked the top
five by lap five.
The first and only
caution flew for debris on lap seven. Wanamaker lined up alongside
Fink for the restart and the two ran wheel to wheel once the green
came back out.
It was a race of
the fittest, as the two swapped the lead. First Wanamaker took it on
lap nine. Then Fink regained the advantage on lap 10. Little did
they know, Steve Shultz, who started13th, had moved to third when he
overtook Higgins for the spot on lap 13.
As the top two
dueled, Shultz overtook Fink and then took control of the race when
he overtook Wanamaker for the lead on lap 14.
Shultz never looked
back and went on to take his third $500 feature win of the season
over Wanamaker, Fink, Higgins and Hawk.
Heat race wins went to
Mike Garris, Sr., Kevin Higgins and Chip Wanamaker.

Despite Improvements, Trouble
Strikes McGrath Again
(8/14/10)- Showcased by the popular annual
Autograph and Camera night, fans flocked out to witness great
side-by-side racing at Sundance vacations Speedway on Saturday. Earl
Paules of Palmerton overtook Kyle Ebersole with two laps remaining
to take the checkered flag in the Modified feature. In what most
would call a dramatic finish, Joe Barbush of Drums led the final 50
yards of the Street Stock feature to take the win and Dave Freundt
of Lehighton took the checkers in the FWD main.
Brian Wozniak led the Street Stock field to
the drop of the green flag in the 25-lap main event. He led the
opening circuits and then the yellow flag waved on lap seven when
John Stonier spun.
The driver to watch by this point in the race
was Steve Shultz, who had advanced at least nine positions from the
start of the race.
Green flag racing resumed and trouble stuck
Jeff McGrath when he was spun and then broadsided by another driver
on lap 12. Luckily he was uninjured. Shultz was turned by another
competitor under the caution and headed to the pits for a look over.
A caution on lap 15 between Kevin Higgins and
Mike Garris, Sr. set up a great restart with Wozniak and Brad
Barbush. Barbush got a great jump and took the race lead from the
leader on lap 15. Joe Barbush followed three laps later to
grab the second spot.
It appeared that B. Barbush had the race in the bag, but that all
changed in the final turn on the final lap when the leader was
collected by a lapped car. J. Barbush scooted by to take the
checkers and the $500 prize. Richie DiMarco grabbed second, followed
by Wozniak, Nick Ross and Chip Wanamaker.
Heat race victories went to Chip Wanamaker, Brian Wozniak and Mitch
Hawk.

Great Run Ends
Early for McGrath at Sundance
(July 31, 2010)- Jeff McGrath was well up in the top 10 before he
was taken out of the Street Stock feature Saturday at Sundance
Vacations Speedway.
After time trialing seventh quickest to start off the evening, Rusty
Smith of Oxford, NY patiently made circles in his Modified. When the
time came to race hard and go for the $3000 victory in the 100-lap
show, Smith wasted no time and blasted to the victory. Steve Shultz
of Drums jumped from third to first in one lap to claim his second
Street Stock victory of the season and Eric Banashefski of Hanover
edged out Dave Freundt to notch his first FWD win of the season. Ian
Cumens got by Robin Johnston with a handful of laps remaining and
went on to take the TQ Midget feature victory.
Mike Garris, Sr. started on the pole and lost the lead to Rich
DiMarco on the opening circuit of the 25-lap Street Stock feature.
Garris tucked into second, followed by Robert Fink, Nick Ross and
Mitch Hawk.
The yellow flag was displayed when DiMarco slowed on the second lap.
That moved Garris to the point.
Green flag racing resumed and Fink grabbed the top spot on lap four.
Four straight lap five cautions slowed the event. The worst of them
all happened when Garris got into Chip Wanamaker in turn four. With
nowhere to go, many drivers piled into the mess, including Ross,
Swartz and Scott Meckes.
When it was all said and done, Joe Barbush lined up in second behind
the leader. Steve Shultz held third, followed by Bernie Uphold and
DiMarco.
With the green back in the air, Barbush and Fink battled for the
lead. Shultz decided that he’d make a move to the outside and his
decision paid off, as he moved n the two leaders on lap 13 to take
the lead.
Despite a quick yellow flag a few laps later, Shultz was
unchallenged as he took the $500 victory over J. Barbush, Brad
Barbush, Fink and DiMarco.
Heat race victories went to Mike Garris, Sr. and Steve Shultz.

Following a Flat Tire at Sundance
(July 17, 2010)- With $600 to win
and double points on the line, the 40-lap Street Stock feature set
the stage for a barnburner. Robert Haueisen started on the pole and
was quickly overtaken by Richie DiMarco. Brian Wozniak climbed to
second.
Brian Brown
overtook Wozniak for second and began to lay the pressure on DiMarco
for the race lead. Meanwhile, Scott Meckes, who started back in the
fourteenth spot began to make his way toward the front.
Brown and DiMarco
ran side by side and Brown led lap six. DiMarco regained the
advantage on the following lap. Meckes worked his way to third, with
Chip Wanamaker and Joe Barbush in tow on lap eight.
Meckes worked his
way around Brown on lap nine and set his sights on the leader. Three
laps later, Meckes overtook DiMarco and not long after J. Barbush
climbed to second.
Brad Barbush
cracked the top five and got by DiMarco for third on lap 17. He then
battled with his brother Joe for the second spot, right on the rear
bumper of Meckes.
DiMarco began to
slip back and both Steve Shultz and Mitch Hawk entered the top five
with a handful of laps remaining.
Despite the heavy
competition behind him, Meckes, who came into the event as the
points leader, retained the lead and went on to take the prize over
B. Barbush, J. Barbush, Shultz and Hawk.
Heat race victories
went to Scott Meckes, Brad Barbush and Robert Fink.

McGrath
Endures Caution-Free Feature At Sundance
(July 3, 2010)-
Piloting a ride lent to him by friend and fellow competitor, Mitch
Hawk, Jeff Mcgrath stayed out of trouble while fighting a tight
racecar and earned a top 15 finish in the caution-free 25-lap Street
Stock feature Saturday night at Sundance Vacations Speedway.
After winning the
Modified main event two weeks early and following it up a week later
with two-straight Sport Modified features, it appears that Earl
Paules of Palmerton is on a mission. Paules took the lead in the
Modified feature on lap eight and cruised to his fourth victory of
the season in the division Saturday at Sundance Vacations Speedway.
Lehighton’s Scott Meckes extended his points lead by notching his
first Street Stock victory of the year and Mike Kline of Lancaster
scored his third FWD win of the season in the 30-lap, double-points
event. Scott Hubler of Coplay notched his sixth-straight victory of
the season in the Pennsylvania Asphalt Legends event.
Richie DiMarco
started from the pole and led the opening lap of the 25-lap Street
Stock feature. With one lap complete, Brian Wozniak held second,
followed by Mitch Hawk, Brad Barbush and Scott Meckes.
Meckes began to
pick off the competition and overtook Hawk for the second spot on
lap four. Hawk began to slide back and Joe Barbush, Steve Shultz and
Chip Wanamaker joined the top five.
Meckes saw an
opening underneath DiMarco on lap seven and made the pass for the
lead stick. Not long after, J. Barbush followed for second with
Shultz and Wanamaker in tow.
J. Barbush reeled
in the leader and stayed right with him over the closing laps. With
the white flag in the air and with two corners remaining, J. Barbush
tried a last-ditch effort to steal the victory and was not
successful. Meckes went on to take the checkers in the caution-free
event for his first win of the season over J. Barbush, Shultz,
Wanamaker and DiMarco.
Heat race wins
went to Chip Wanamaker and Scott Meckes.

McGrath Encounters
Problems and Finishes 12th at Sundance
By: Mike Odwazny
(June 19, 2010)- Josh Oswald would lead the Street Stocks to the
green, but before the first lap was complete Chip Wanamaker would
grab the top spot. Steve Schultz, who won the last Street Stock
feature two weeks ago, began to move forward. Mitch Hawk, who is a
teammate to Chip Wanamaker, moved into the 2nd spot early. By lap
10, the top five would be Wanamaker, Hawk, Schultz, Joe Barbush, and
Scott Meckes. Schultz would move to 2nd by lap 12, but Wanamaker
would prove to be too strong and marched to victory in the caution
free event. Wanamaker had engine problems in practice which kept the
crew busy, and he thanked them in victory lane.

McGrath Stays Out of Troube En
Route to 12th Place Finish at Sundance
(June 5, 2010)- In
conjunction with the third annual Evergreen Raceway Reunion and
after finishing as the runner up in his last outing, Bobby Jones of
Lehighton wheeled his Modified to his first feature win of the
season Saturday at Sundance Vacations Speedway. Steve Shultz of
Drums notched his first Street Stock victory of the season and East
Stroudsburg’s Bill Verwys, Jr. scored his second main event win of
the year. Robin Johnston held off his fellow ATQMRA competitors to
notch his first win of the year at the speedway.
Mike Garris, Sr.
led the Street Stock field to the drop of the green flag in the
25-lap feature and was quickly overtaken by Josh Oswald. However,
contact between the top two ended in a turn four spin by Oswald
before a lap was complete.
The exchange moved
Brian Brown to the point for the complete restart and was challenged
by Mitch Hawk for the lead. Hawk overtook Brown and Steve Shultz
followed for second with Chip Wanamaker and Joe Barbush in pursuit.
Shultz jumped to
the outside groove and battled Hawk. The duo came across the strip
to complete lap three and Shultz had a small advantage and led the
lap.
Problems stuck
Harry Sager as he came out of turn two on the fourth circuit. With a
flat right rear tire and unable to turn, Sager shot up the
racetrack. With nowhere to go, Richie DiMarco jumped to the outside
and Sager collected him. With damage, both drivers were forced to
retire from the event.
Green flag racing
resumed and Shultz began to distance himself from the rest of the
field over the remaining green flag laps. He crossed the stripe and
took his first $500 feature win of the season over Hawk, Wanamaker,
Scott Meckes and Joe Barbush. Shultz was awarded another $100 for
the victory, which was courtesy of Dale Fey, the 1990 Street Stock
champion and owner of Wheel’s Bar & Grill.
Steve Shultz and
Scott Meckes were heat race winners.
The McGrath race
team has big plans for the upcoming event. The car has been lacking
power and a more competitive power plant will be installed in the
#31 for the next race. Come on out and cheer us on!

Jeff McGrath Reflects on the
Season So Far
(May 25, 2008) After spending Saturday at the track tweaking and
adjusting, the McGrath Motorsports team threw on two new right side
tires last Sunday.
Unfortunately their day ended with a bent right front upper ball
joint, shock, and lower ball joint.
Although driver Jeff McGrath didn’t have what most would call a
“career night”, the car got faster on new rubber, and they were able
to tighten it up for better handling.
Their main focus heading into the show on Saturday, June 5 is to get
the front end back together and focus on speed. “We now know how the
car will react to changes we make and what will work and what
won't”, said Jeff.
He also commented on all of the help he received in the pit area
from many people. “I have to thank Mitch and Dan from Hawk Racing
for spending the day at the track Saturday, my crew chief Scott
Henderson for coining up for the tires and making the right call to
have me black flagged after changing the right front tire. He didn't
notice it at first, but after I got back on the track, he asked
Chris Ammon to radio to have me return to the pits, rather than risk
having something else break, and the car wind up in a ball”
He continued by saying, “I would also like to thank Rob Wallace who
has mostly recovered from his arm surgery and was back in the pits
Sunday, making sure every adjustment was documented, getting the
tires right, and reading the numbers to suggest adjustments. Most
importantly, I would like to thank my wife and son! My wife Kim for
letting me play on Saturday and footing the bills, and son Jake for
doing what needed to be done without being asked, and working the
video camera”. Last but not least, “Thank you to Joe (Callavini) for
opening the track and providing the practice session on Saturday, it
helped out a ton”, said McGrath.
McGrath is looking forward to the first Saturday night show of the
season and has learned a lot about his ride in the early going
portion of the season. “All in all, it wasn't that bad. We learned a
lot, despite our day ending 10 laps early, but that is the nature of
this sport. No one here is discouraged, and will be in the garage
wrenching away for our first Saturday night race”, he said. “After
all, we all hate running on Sunday”.
Lady Luck
Forces 15th Place Finish on McGrath at Sundance
(May 23, 2010)-
While competing with several of the top Modified drivers in the
Northeast, along with “Jon Boy” Brown, one of the stars of Madhouse
in competition, Earl Paules of Palmerton hit the pits for a right
rear tire with 20 laps remaining and came back to take the $5000
“Drive for Five” victory Sunday at Sundance Vacations Speedway.
Harry Sager of Hanover Twp. Notched this first career Street Stock
victory and Mike Kline of Lancaster scored his second-straight 4 Cyl.
FWD main event win.
Brian Brown started
from the pole, yet Mike Garris led the first circuit of the 25-lap
Street Stock feature. Brown gained the top spot back after five laps
were complete, with Harry Sager in second. Steve Shultz ran third,
followed by Brian Wozniak and Chip Wanamaker.
Scott Meckes
cracked the top five and a good battle began to ensue amongst the
top cars until the yellow flag waved on lap 15 when Meckes and
Wanamaker appeared to make contact. Wanamaker’s car shot up the
backstretch wall and several cars were also collected, including Joe
Barbush and Jeff McGrath.
Green flag racing
resumed and with a great restart, Sager was able to steal the lead
from Brown.
Wozniak made a
third place pass on Wozniak stick on lap 16. The then followed later
in the race to take the second spot from Brown.
Shultz ran down
Sager and could not complete the pass. Sager went on to score his
first $500 career Street Stock win over Shultz, Brown, Meckes and
Richie DiMarco. Sager also picked up an additional $50 when he drew
his finishing position in victory lane for the Sundance Vacations
Contingency Program.

McGrath Continues to
Improve at Sundance Vacations Speedway
(May 9, 2010) After crashing out of the opening day feature last
month at Sundance Vacations Speedway, Kyle Ebersole of Hummelstown,
PA rebounded with a feature win. He doubled that feat again on
Mother’s Day when he beat Earl Paules to the checkers to score his
second straight Modified feature win. Joe Barbush of Drums started
ninth in the Street Stock main and drove off to score his first
victory of the season and 14-year old Mike Kline of Lancaster, PA
picked up his first career victory in the 4 Cyl. FWD feature.
Brian Brown started
from the pole and was overtaken by Harry Sager before a single lap
was scored in the 25-lap Street Stock feature. Mitch Hawk held third
with Mike Garris, Sr. and Josh Oswald closely following.
Hawk moved into the
second spot and then lost the position to Oswald on lap four. Joe
Barbush, Jr. held the third spot on lap seven, with Chip Wanamaker
and Hawk as the top five.
A yellow flag was
thrown on lap seven when Robert Fink got into Garris in turns one
and two. Green flag racing resumed and Barbush overtook Oswald for
second. Others got by Oswald as well, including Wanamaker and then
Scott Meckes.
Sager held off
several pass attempts from Barbush and finally surrendered the lead
on lap 10.
The closing laps
were caution-free and Barbush took his second $500 win of the season
in dominating fashion over Sager, Wanamaker, Meckes and Hawk.
With positive
results, Jeff McGrath has been adjusting and tuning week after week.
He’s looking forward to May 23, when his friends from Tattoo Island

Performance
Improving for Jeff McGrath
(May 1, 2010) Brian Brown led a full Street Stock field to the drop
of the green flag for the 25-lap feature Saturday at Sundance
Vacations Speedway. However, outside pole
sitter, Josh Oswald quickly grabbed the race lead. Jim Yamelski
grabbed second with Mitch Hawk in close pursuit.
Steve Shultz cracked the top five and then overtook Hawk for third
on lap seven. Meanwhile, Yamelski began to pressure Oswald for the
top spot but the leader wasn’t about to give it up that easily.
Following a quick lap 10 caution, Shultz got by Oswald and DiMarco
followed through for second. Scott Meckes joined the mix and took
third, followed by Robert Fink and Kevin Higgins.
The caution flag flew on lap 13 when Oswald and Yamelski made
contact on the front stretch. Several cars got a piece of the
action, including Nick Ross, Hawk and Brian Wozniak. Both Ross and
Wozniak’s days came to an end.
Green flag racing resumed and Meckes made a three wide move on the
bottom and overtook the leaders. Shultz began to slide backward and
DiMarco grabbed the second spot.
Trying to get by the leader, DiMarco looked high and low for real
estate without success. However, that changed on the final lap when
DiMarco squeezed by the leader and crossed the finish line to earn
his first points paying victory since 2008. Meckes settled for
second, followed by Oswald, Higgins and Chip Wanamaker.
Jeff McGrath was close to a top 10 finish and lost several spots
while coming out of turn four on the final lap.
Heat race wins went to Jim Yamelski, Richie DiMarco and Mitch Hawk.
Jeff McGrath picked up $50 when his finishing position was pulled in

10 Finish at Sundance Vacations Speedway
(April 11, 2010)- Chip Wanamaker ran the fastest Street Stock
qualifying lap on Saturday and the rolled a four for the invert,
which put Scott Meckes on the pole for the 25-lap Street Stock
feature. Meckes held the lead for two circuits before Richie DiMarco
overtook him.
The first of two cautions flew on lap eight when Jim Yamelski
received a flat tire. Green flag racing resumed and Joe Barbush got
by Meckes for the runner up spot.
Chip Wanamaker moved to third following a lap 11 restart and Steve
Shultz worked into fifth, just behind Meckes.
It appeared that Barbush
had a faster car, yet drove patiently behind the leader. Barbush
began to set up a pass with two laps remaining and drover up
alongside DiMarco on the white flag lap.
Not knowing what to expect through the final two corners, the two
drivers crossed the finish line side-by-side and Barbush came out
with the victory. DiMarco finished a very close second, followed by
Wanamaker, Meckes and Shultz.
Knowing that he’ll be changing gears prior to the next race in two
weeks, Jeff McGrath held his own and raced patiently. He crossed the
stripe in tenth.
